Practical Training covers:

  • Basic construction, names of components and the purpose and use of all controls and gauges
  • Use of the operator’s handbooks, other information sources, Approved Codes of Practice and legislative documents
  • Pre-use, start, running and close-down procedure
  • Preparing the excavator for site and road travel
  • Travelling the excavator over different terrain, including rough, undulating ground, using different wheel drive and steer combinations
  • Travelling up and down substantial inclines
  • Manoeuvring progressing to confined spaces in a forward and reverse direction
  • Positioning the machine to excavate
  • Setting the machine to excavate
  • Soil and material characteristics
  • Excavating below ground level
  • Loading vehicles and hoppers
  • Backfilling, grading, spreading and levelling different types of material
  • Removing and re-attaching two different buckets
  • Placing the excavator in an out-of-service condition
  • Loading and unloading procedures on and off a transporter
