Theory Training includes the following subjects:

- Employee’s duties and responsibilities under law
- Safety signs
- Dealing with hazards
- Accident prevention and control
- Selection and use of personal protective equipment
- Handling plant-related harmful substances
- Operator Roles and responsibilities
- Operator preparation for work
- Machine Travelling and manoeuvring
- Setting up for work
- Working tasks
- Completing work
- Shutdown procedures
- Machine handbooks
Practical Training covers:
- Basic construction, names of components and the purpose and use of all controls and gauges
- Use of the operator’s handbooks, other information sources, Approved Codes of Practice and legislative documents
- Pre-use, start, running and close-down procedure
- Preparing the excavator for site and road travel
- Travelling the excavator over different terrain, including rough, undulating ground, using different wheel drive and steer combinations
- Travelling up and down substantial inclines
- Manoeuvring progressing to confined spaces in a forward and reverse direction
- Positioning the machine to excavate
- Setting the machine to excavate
- Soil and material characteristics
- Excavating below ground level
- Loading vehicles and hoppers
- Backfilling, grading, spreading and levelling different types of material
- Removing and re-attaching two different buckets
- Placing the excavator in an out-of-service condition
- Loading and unloading procedures on and off a transporter
