Practical Training covers:

  • Basic construction, names of components and the purpose and use of all controls and gauges
  • Use of the operator’s handbook, other information sources, Approved Codes of Practice and legislative documents
  • Pre-use, start, running checks and close-down procedure
  • Preparing the loading shovel for site and road travel
  • Travelling the loading shovel over differing types of terrain, including rough undulating ground and substantial inclines, both in a loaded and unloaded state
  • Manoeuvring progressing to confined spaces in a forward and reverse direction
  • Precautions and actions for underground and overhead services and other hazards
  • How to excavate from embankments of different materials and form stockpiles and ramps
  • Characteristics of materials and how to load them into receptacles, i.e. vehicles, hoppers etc
  • Checking the integrity and security of the load
  • How to backfill, spread and level different types of material
  • Placing the loading shovel in an out-of-service condition
  • Loading and unloading procedures on and off a transporter
