Driver CPC

Driver Certificate of Professional Competence

Course Overview

The Driver CPC is a qualification that all professional Bus, Coach and Lorry drivers will need to have if they want to drive for a living. Just holding a vocational driving licence is not sufficient. In September 2008 the new Driver CPC came into force for bus and coach drivers and September 2009 for Lorry drivers. The Driver CPC applies to drivers of Categories C1, C1 + E, C or C+E , D1, D1+E or D or D+E. If you hold a licence in both PVC and LGV you will only need one CPC.

Periodic training is required under the scheme meaning that continued professional development is essential for LGV drivers throughout the professional driver’s career, no matter how infrequently they drive.  The required 35 hours of the CPC are held over 5 days (7 hours per day) initially to attain the standard and 35 hours over a 5 year period thereafter. It is important that you allow yourself enough time to complete the training within the five year period otherwise you will not be allowed to drive professionally until you do.

There will be no extension to the September 2014 deadline to achieve CPC status as it is a European Directive 2003/59/EC.
